Quilt Block Mania April 2024

Scrappy Starfish Block by Sewistry!

The response to my first Quilt Block Mania block (the Coffee Bean) has been so wonderful - thank you! I’m doing one more block this Spring - this one - and then taking a break until the fall…stay tuned for that!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy all April’s blocks centered around the theme of BEACH! Here in central North Carolina, we are fortunate enough to live just a couple hours’ drive from lots of lovely beaches. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to some warmer days ahead and hopefully some day trips to the coast!

My scrappy starfish quilt block is crafted from an assortment of fabric scraps, so each starfish block is a unique creation, much like the diverse array of starfish found in the depths of the sea. You could make an entire quilt from this block and really clear out your scraps, or combine it with some of the other beach-themed blocks from my fellow talented designers (see below) for a quilt that evokes sun-soaked relaxation and salty breezes. You could also use a single block for a wall hanging, throw pillow cover, or on a tote bag. Whether you're a seasoned quilter or a novice crafter, the scrappy starfish quilt block is sure to bring a touch of coastal charm to your next project!

This block gives you lots of creative freedom - I provide a template for the starfish shape, which is them appliqued to the background. Either the starfish or the background (or both!!) could be from a single piece of fabric or from scraps pieced together.

For my version, I pulled assorted orange scraps from my stash that were rectangular. I joined them together along the long edge, and then sliced them into 2” strips. Then I took some other long orange scraps and pieced them between those strips until I had a slab big enough to cut the starfish from. For the background, I used some treasured Carolyn Friedlander Mosaic - it’s got a subtle metallic sheen on top of a sandy Kona cotton, perfect for this project!

I can’t wait to see what you create - please tag me (@sewistry_nc on Instagram) and use the hashtags #ScrappyStarfishBlock and #SewistryQuiltPatterns !
